Top 5 Custom Motorcycles of August 2026

We threw some mighty fine iron at you in August, and it was one of those months where I’m truly surprised at what made the grade for our readers. If there are two takeaways from last month, it’s that some things just can’t miss—the classics, if you will. But it’s also impossible to ignore that the rules are being quietly rewritten all over the globe.

Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way, as it suggests a future for custom motorcycles that everyone can take part in—and it gives us some serious variety to cover. So join us, if you will, in a victory lap for our top 5 custom builds of August 2026, and what a varied group it is.

5. 1995 SYM Wolf 125 by 2Loud Custom

Taipei-based 2Loud Custom regularly applies high-level fabrication to small-displacement domestic commuters. For this project, builder Ma ‘Max’ Yicheng started with a 1995 SYM Wolf 125. The owner retained the bike because it was his first motorcycle, but rather than a stock restoration, he requested a heavy overhaul anchored by oversized balloon tires.

Fitting massive rubber on a lightweight 124.6 cc commuter requires serious chassis manipulation. Max cut and reshaped the frame, grafting on a proprietary 2Loud swingarm and custom GJMS shocks to clear the rear tire. To secure the required width up front, he adapted the triple clamps, forks and disc brake assembly from a Yamaha TW200, machining the components to fit the SYM steering head.

Pushing that much rolling mass with the factory 11-horsepower engine was unfeasible. Max swapped the original mill for a Haoyue-built 280 cc single-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed gearbox. Fueling is handled by a CVK32 carburetor on a custom velocity stack. The exhaust system weaves tightly around the front of the cases before routing under the seat and exiting out the opposite side, keeping heat away from the rider’s legs. Max engineered three separate internal baffles to manage the exhaust note without choking the increased displacement.

The rider interface relies on custom ape-hanger handlebars fitted with Frando master cylinders and a hidden turn-signal switch integrated into the left perch. A vintage Yamaha RD50 fuel tank sits over the backbone, finished in a green-and-gold chameleon paint with gold-leaf accents. It pairs with a brown suede saddle that conceals an aluminum tray housing an STK lithium-ion battery. To break up the machined surfaces, Max hand-hammered heavy textures into the taillight housing, fuel cap, reservoir covers and sections of the exhaust, adding distinct analog character to a heavily reworked commuter. 4. 2002 Honda CB400SS Chopper by Rez Industries

Taiwan’s dense urban geography and blistering humidity heavily favor lightweight, bulletproof Japanese singles over heavy, temperamental American V-twins. Excell Lee of Taipei-based Rez Industries embraced this geographic reality, utilizing a sensible 2002 Honda CB400SS commuter as the foundation for an outlaw chopper. The air-cooled 397 cc single produces a modest 29 horsepower, but Lee stripped the lightweight machine down to its core to build a radically stretched, traditional Americana profile that thrives in Shilin District traffic.

To achieve a classic chopper stance, Lee retained the factory lower motor mounts to maintain the drivetrain alignment, but entirely cut away the remainder of the semi-double cradle chassis. He stretched the front half of the frame significantly up and out, while fabricating a rigid hardtail rear section. A towering chrome extended springer fork with vintage ‘Elf Shoe’ rockers dictates the front geometry. Pushing a 21-inch front wheel, Lee bypassed purist spool-hub aesthetics, mounting a small hydraulic disc brake to secure functional stopping power alongside the factory rear drum.

The rider triangle relies on narrow, handmade rabbit-ear pullback handlebars. The cockpit is kept surgically clean of wiring and levers by converting the Honda’s five-speed transmission to a foot-clutch and jockey-shift configuration down low. Exhaust routing heavily dictates the bike’s profile; Lee fabricated aggressively textured ripple pipes that sweep upward into classic fishtail tips. Out back, a tall, trident-style sissy bar welded from twisted square stock houses a center-mounted combat bayonet. A Frisco-mounted Sportster tank and tight trailer fender wear a blue pearl base under engine-turned silver-leaf flames outlined in gold pinstriping, proving heavy displacement is not a prerequisite for proper chopper geometry. 3. 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA Bobber by Hammerbike

Over 30,000 Harley-Davidson WLAs shipped to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program during WWII. Most of those 45-cubic-inch flatheads were ground into dust, but Roman Molchanov of Siberia’s Hammerbike salvaged a 1942 survivor to build a plunger-framed bobber that relies heavily on analog fabrication.

Molchanov scrapped the factory chassis in favor of a one-off custom frame utilizing a plunger-style rear suspension. It is a calculated engineering choice that preserves the unbroken visual lines of a traditional hardtail while introducing actual damping to the rear axle. Up front, a traditional springer fork runs low-rise bars, dropping the rider into a vintage ergonomic pocket atop a sprung leather saddle.

The 739 cc side-valve V-twin underwent an extensive internal overhaul and received a modern Denso alternator to manage updated electrics. However, the exterior metalwork defines the build. Molchanov systematically hand-peened the cast engine cases, outer covers and the custom oil tank. Generating that uniform dimpled texture required an estimated 250,000 individual hammer strikes. To keep the visual weight squarely on the textured block, the exhaust is limited to a pair of basic slash-cut pipes dropping straight from the cylinders into a tight 90-degree bend.

The rolling stock utilizes traditional mechanical drum brakes laced to black powder-coated rims and wrapped in high-profile Shinko whitewalls. Up top, what appears to be a standard Sportster-style fuel tank features fabricated internal recesses to conceal the battery and ignition coil, keeping the backbone surgically clean. Molchanov finished the sheet metal in a heavy silver metal-flake base under a blue candy top coat, delivering a heavily labored custom that ignores bolt-on catalog convenience. [MORE]

2. 1983 Yamaha TR1 by Helsingland Custom Workshop

The 1983 Yamaha TR1 is a forgotten metric tourer that usually rots in the back of Swedish barns. But underneath that dated plastic hides a 981 cc V-twin engineered to function as a stressed chassis member—a dream architecture for a builder willing to do the brutal math. Linus Johansson of Helsingland Custom Workshop saw the potential and spent five grueling years hacking away the excess to build a low, lean and violently aggressive machine around that 69-horsepower core.

TR1 6

Johansson’s approach was labor-intensive but structurally pure. He chopped the factory subframe entirely and fabricated a new rear section to expose the original mono-shock layout. While retaining the TR1 swingarm, he tossed the vintage damping for a modern YSS shock. To correct the front-end geometry and inject serious stopping power, Johansson grafted on an Aprilia RSV4 front end. Adapting the RSV4’s Öhlins forks and Brembo hardware required a bespoke steering stem and a custom CNC-machined upper triple clamp to run traditional handlebars. Framing that Öhlins gold is a hand-fabricated number plate bearing 55 for Yamaha’s founding year, pierced by a minimalist Highsider Dual-Stream LED projector.

TR1 10

Running RSV4 alloy wheels on a vintage Yamaha demanded heavy internal machining to fit the Aprilia rear wheel and Brembo assembly inside the stock swingarm. The unsprung package is wrapped in aggressive Continental TKC80 rubber featuring a 130 up front and a massive 170 at the rear. Dead center sits the 75-degree V-twin. Johansson painted the block and hand-filed the cooling fins to bare metal while glass-bead blasting the covers to a satin finish. Fueling is handled by twin Mikuni VM38 carburetors on DNA open filters, and Netherlands-based Mad Exhaust fabricated a complex stainless steel system that weaves tightly through the chassis.

What looks like a vintage Kawasaki Z400 fuel tank is actually a hollow facade concealing a custom stainless fuel cell and a modernized Motogadget wiring harness. This trick keeps the top line surgically clean while housing a Carmo TCI unit for reliable ignition timing. Johansson bypassed loud graphics for a monochromatic Nardo Grey paint scheme. It serves as a cold industrial backdrop that forces the raw stainless exhaust and gold suspension to pull focus, highlighting texture, geometry and restraint. [MORE]

1. 2007 Triumph Bonneville Street Tracker by Mule Motorcycles

Commissioning a memorial motorcycle frequently results in a static showpiece weighed down by sentiment and excessive chrome. Richard Pollock of Mule Motorcycles takes a different route with this 2007 Triumph Bonneville Black. Built for an Ohio client as a tribute to the victims of the October 7 Nova Music Festival, the tracker had a firm deadline for a Cleveland rally.

The donor was a familiar chassis—an older Mule build Pollock located in his current base of Boise, Idaho. After dragging the non-running bike back to his shop, he traced the electrical fault to a fried ignition pickup coil, a discontinued Triumph part. He wired in an Italian replacement alongside a programmable aftermarket ignition module. The new electronics raise the rev ceiling by 800 RPM and deliver a much sharper advance curve to wake up the 865 cc parallel twin.

Mule triumph jma 32

Establishing a proper tracker stance meant tossing the old 18-inch wheels. Pollock re-laced the setup with 19-inch hoops and wrapped them in Dunlop DT4 rubber. The front braking system highlights the depth of his fabrication: a custom Barnes-type narrow center hub pairs with bespoke outer bearing carriers. A Kosman bracket mounts a Brembo four-piston caliper, which bites into a Beringer floating rotor. The front end itself relies on powder-coated Buell M2 Cyclone forks featuring independent compression and rebound damping in each leg, all secured by custom Mule triple clamps.

To correct the rear geometry, the lengthy factory subframe was chopped and replaced with a tight custom hoop, supported by a pair of Race Tech coilovers. The rider interface remains deliberately sparse. Stainless Mule dirt-track handlebars wear the stock controls, while a KOSO GPS speedometer cleans up the dash by eliminating wheel sensors. Out back, a First Klass Glass tracker saddle forms the tail section, featuring upholstery turned around in a single day by the crew at Corbin. A custom 2-into-1 exhaust with a reworked DG muffler keeps the engine note crisp but streetable, while Mule’s proprietary countershaft cover plates replace the bulky OE sprocket cover.

The visual focal point rests on the stock fuel tank and tail section. San Diego artist Irene Cosmos and painter Tony Lalicatta executed a detailed tribute using pure airbrushing, avoiding decals hidden under clear coat. The machine made its Cleveland debut with time to spare, but its real success happened after the event. Rather than parking the Bonneville as a static display piece, the collector-owner recognized the hardware underneath and has been riding the bike hard, proving a rolling tribute does its best work out on the street.
