ATOM WILLARD Exits ALKALINE TRIO Less Than Three Years After Joining Full-Time

Atom Willard has officially parted ways with Alkaline Trio, ending his tenure with the band less than three years after joining as a full-time member.

The drummer announced his departure in an Instagram post on Monday, February 2, framing the decision as deeply personal amid broader global turmoil. “With everything going on, going wrong in the world right now, this may seem insignificant but it’s not for me,” Willard wrote. “I have parted ways with Alkaline Trio.”

He went on to thank those who supported him during his time in the band, adding, “Thanks to everyone who made my time there so awesome, very thankful for the experience.”

At present, Willard has not indicated that his exit is connected to another musical commitment. Instead, he suggested a period of reflection and openness, noting that he will consider “all touring, collaborations and studio opportunities” as he figures out his next move.

Willard closed his statement on a broader, more hopeful note: “I hope we can all look to love, compassion, understanding and acceptance of our fellow humans in these dark and scary times.”

As of this writing, Alkaline Trio have yet to comment publicly on Willard’s departure. The band’s official website still lists him alongside founding members Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano, underscoring the suddenness of the announcement.

Willard joined Alkaline Trio in 2023, stepping into the role following the departure of longtime drummer Derek Grant, who exited after 22 years with the band, citing that it was “the best thing for me and my mental health.” While Willard did not perform on Alkaline Trio’s most recent album, Blood, Hair and Eyeballs — which featured Grant on drums — he quickly became a visible part of the band’s touring lineup.

Beyond Alkaline Trio, Willard’s résumé reads like a modern punk and alt-rock history lesson. He previously spent seven years with Against Me! and has also played with The Offspring, Angels & Airwaves, Danko Jones, and Rocket From the Crypt, cementing his reputation as one of the scene’s most reliable and versatile drummers.
