The Philadelphia Phillies made a big financial commitment when they decided to re-sign designated hitter Kyle Schwarber before this season began. And it has been paying off.
The team has been leaning on Schwarber’s power production once again this year, making every update on his health worth watching. That proved to be the case against last month as a relatively minor back issue prompted extra caution, given how central he has become to the club’s lineup.
“The last thing the Phillies want is for a nagging issue to become a bigger one,” as NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Cole Weintraub put it, after the team scratched Schwarber from the lineup over a back injury. “The Phillies do not need Schwarber to push through one June game if it risks losing him for a longer stretch. He has remained one of the central pieces of their offense, and the club has enough left-handed firepower in Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott to give him a day.”
Given that backdrop, Schwarber’s recent decision on the upcoming Home Run Derby, which will be hosted at Citizens Bank Park, was a telling one.

Earlier this week, Schwarber revealed that he has decided to participate in the upcoming derby, assuming he is invited and that his back issue fully dissipates by then.
“Yeah, if everything lines up, I’m there,” Schwarber told Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci on Monday. “If this back deal calms down, then I’ll probably do it. But just gotta make sure, one, I’m there, and then two, that this back thing kind of calms down.”
As one of the best home run hitters in the sport, Schwarber is virtually certain to earn an invitation to the event. But the status of his back following his recent injury setback is a bigger question.

Schwarber’s decision on the Home Run Derby is significant because he has put together arguably the best power season of his career.
“Schwarber leads the majors with 30 home runs through 82 games, and is on pace for a new career high after setting a personal benchmark last year with 56 homers,” Verducci added. “He is a near certainty to be selected to the National League squad as the backup designated hitter to Shohei Ohtani, who will be in the NL’s starting lineup after leading all players in Phase 1 of fan voting.”
But if Schwarber’s back doesn’t hold up over the next several weeks, the derby could be the least of the Phillies’ worries. As the team continues to rely on Schwarber’s production at the plate, it can hardly afford to lose him. And if there’s any chance that participating in the Home Run Derby could exacerbate his injury, he will almost certainly skip the chance to demonstrate his slug in front of the home fans at the event.
