The 2026 Emmy Awards winners feel pretty representative of the current state of the television industry, with streaming series The Pitt and Widow’s Bay winning in the Outstanding Drama Series and Comedy Series categories, respectively. Pitt star Noah Wyle was also recognized for his work in the medical drama, while Widow’s Bay received acting trophies for Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, and Kate O’Flynn.
They weren’t the only big winners of the night, though, as Jean Smart took home her fifth Outstanding Actress in a Comedy trophy for her work on Hacks — both she and Allison Janney of The Diplomat (who won for Supporting Actress in a Drama) are now tied with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus with the record for most individual wins by a performer: All four women have received eight Emmys.
Speaking of big wins for actresses, Rhea Seehorn received the Lead Actress in a Drama award for her acclaimed work on Pluribus (almost making up for six years of Better Call Saul snubs). Creator Vince Gilligan also won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series, his first win in the category.

DTF St. Louis was the big winner in the Limited Series field, even as Matthew Rhys made Emmy history by being the first person to win both Lead Actor in a Comedy and, thanks to Netflix’s The Beast in Me, Lead Actor in a Limited Series/Movie. Additionally, as many predicted, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won for Outstanding Variety Series, its final Emmy win.
As Colbert revealed during his speech, his show’s head writer also served as the head writer for the Emmys ceremony. Mariska Hargitay successfully brought a game theater kid energy to hosting the show, and overall kept the vibe positive and fun. Plus, it was a relatively tight evening, ending a few minutes early while also including multiple sketches, a heartfelt In Memoriam segment, an additional Dolly Parton tribute, and John Mulaney bringing down the house.
